Non-Geographic numbers are a unique type of numbers, affiliated with a certain country but not to any specific or certain geographic location within that country. The non-geographic number does not relate to any pinpoint geographic location. It is free of being bound to some geographic locality. Such numbers are quite popular in the United Kingdom and are privately available for sale. These numbers are not directly connected to a particular telephone line or telephony circuit; hence, these numbers do not give away the geographic location of the line being called. These numbers are commonly identified by their prefixes in the United Kingdom, such as 09- , 0870- , 0871- etc.
There are different non geographic numbers that differ on the basis of method of billing. The charges of calls by these non geographic numbers can be paid by the caller, by the call receiver, or the caller and receiver can share the charges of the calls.
Once the non-geographic number (NGN) is dialled by the caller, the NGN diverts the incoming call to the target telephone line as per the choice of the subscriber. The NGN eventually transfers the call to a regular geographic number and it is then routed by the telephone exchange of that particular area in the same way as a regular call is dealt with.
Fixed rate non-geographic numbers are traditional telemarketing phone numbers. These types of numbers charge the client for their calls. National rate non-geographic telephone numbers begin with 0870 and allow the customers to call at a cheaper national rate, no matter where they are in the United Kingdom.
There are different categories of non geographic numbers. The numbers starting from 0800 are free phone numbers. By dialing these numbers, people are not charged instead the company that is called pays the charges. There are many benefits of having a free phone number. It increases the call rates of customers thus there are more chances of a business to flourish by using a free phone number. Researches have found that people prefer to call on free numbers. It is also an indicative of trust on customers and enhances the relationships of a company and its customers.
Personal non-geographic telephone numbers go by many names such as call shield, follow me, and personal numbers. The great benefit about this type of telephone number is that it provides its clients with just one telephone number, but has that number routed to any other number according to the wish of the client.
Some other numbers are 0875 and 0844 that are very beneficial for the companies or businesses that own these numbers. On every call on these two numbers the caller pays for the call on every minute. Companies earn money by having these numbers.
With many pre-paid calling cards, calls to non-geographic numbers are blocked. Either the United Kingdom partner does not connect the incoming call or the calling card provider does not accept the charge taxed by the United Kingdom operator.
