The Working Of An Offset Printer

Printing service is used by most businesses for different purposes such as marketing and intra-company communications. Hence, it is good to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, particularly offset printing, which is one of the most widely employed printing technologies.

The customers and the printers like offset printing because of its cost effectiveness for the production of large number of prints. The customers giving bulk printing orders are advised by the printers to opt for offset printing because of this reason.

Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not blend with water. Its name comes from the fact that in this process, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done using rubber blankets as a medium.

The first step is developing the images. Previously the images were prepared by creating film negatives and were then transferred to aluminum printing plates. However, a modern printing company would now prepare the plates directly by using an image setting system. This plate is then put on a cylinder in the proper configuration. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area gets a thin coating of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spread beyond the images.

The image is then transferred from the plates to the rubber blanket rolled on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. After that, sheets of paper of required proportions are put together and the rubber blankets transfer the image to the sheets on a third cylinder, where it comes out as the correct side.

Printed sheets are stapled, pasted, or arranged in any other manner as needed and the printing company delivers them after giving some finishing touches.
