In a Buddhist funeral, the followers of the religion are particular about performing elaborate rites and ceremonies during the funeral service. The rituals performed during the Buddhist funeral are expected to set the person’s soul free from the shackles of life and let it find a new and better life after death where it comes closer to enlightenment.
The Buddhist funeral services which conclude with cremation in most cases, are done by Buddhist monks with the help of the family. The underlying positive energies are released from the soul by the chanting of appropriate sutras by Buddhist monks who read from the holy scriptures. To prevent any decomposition in case of delayed cremation, the mortal remains are prepared cautiously while the religious chanting is being performed. The body is washed and put to rest in a casket along with incense sticks, candles, flowers and a photograph of the departed person.
If the funeral is delayed by some days for distant relatives to get a last look, the monks go to the dead person’s residence daily and chant sutras from the Abhidharma, an important Buddhist book.
On the day of the funeral, Buddhist monks perform the last rites and their chief gives a brief speech in honour of the deceased person focusing on his achievements in life and consoling the aggrieved family that death is destiny. Other rituals like wrapping a white cloth around the coffin during the religious incantation and Pansakula, a custom of passing on virtues and blessings to the soul of the deceased are also carried out.
Prior to the cremation, a family member or closest kin has to say something about the deceased. The Buddhist funeral ceremonies conclude with a special meal for the visitors after the funeral.
A large number of people in China, Tibet, Thailand and a few other Asian countries with a large Buddhist population follow the Buddhist funeral tradition with some variations based on the local customs.
