Restoring The Environment Through Carbon Offset
As the planet tries to deal with the grave threats posed by air-borne pollutants and greenhouse gases, carbon offset is providing an incentive to encourage governments and companies to keep carbon emissions within reasonable limits.
The release of deadly greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is balanced by the carbon offset system through the use of renewable and cleaner energy resources, reforestation schemes and many other green initiatives. The Kyoto Protocol, an international pact signed by most countries in 2005 puts limits on emission by all participant countries depending on if they are emerging or developed, which in turn determines emissions by different industries in each of these countries.
The Protocol makes it compulsory for commercial entities emitting above the allowed limit of carbon dioxide to bring down their emissions to safe levels, or they must buy carbon credits certificates which can be traded in the market, or alternatively pay a penalty for the emissions, which is known as carbon tax. One carbon credit, which is an older instrument than carbon offset, permits the credit’s buyer to discharge 1000 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and this method is the most cost effective method of purchasing an allowance to release extra greenhouse gases in the air. Both global and local firms, to make their operations carbon neutral and enhance their image before customers and investors, are increasingly purchasing carbon credits.
Another novel instrument, carbon offset, has paved the way for an excellent economic opportunity, particularly in the third world countries, as the scheme provides smooth financing for green projects that are designed to help decrease the overall carbon footprint on the planet. It therefore aids in promoting ecological programmes concerned with to reforestation, conservation of resources, and clean energy choices like wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc.
Even individuals are increasingly using the carbon offset scheme to decrease their carbon footprint and are advocating this method to others as well. Carbon offset can be easily bought online through one of the many providers, but caution must be taken to ensure that your money is channelled to the correct projects.
However, we must remember that buying carbon offset does not take away our responsibilities, and that all of us can perform a significant role in reducing our carbon footprints by making small changes to our daily lives. Small steps like switching off electrical devices and appliances when not in use, substituting fossil fuels by cleaner ones like biodiesel, and using LED lighting and low-energy bulbs can actually help a lot in decreasing global emissions.
Carbon offset is yet to find its place in an average person’s vocabulary. Mass awareness on the issue through extensive education is required to bring us a few steps closer to a clean and green planet.
