The pressures of modern life unfortunately means that the incidence of people suffering from Depression and Anxiety has dramatically increased. Most people probably now know of at least one person who has suffered from these ailments, and as such there is far less stigma attached to this illness. However those who have never suffered find it difficult to understand how this illness can affect people.
There are many symptoms that are associated with depression so someone who thinks they might be suffering should seek help from an expert for an early diagnosis. Symptoms include weight loss or gain, an inability to sleep or difficulty in waking up, apathy and a lack of interest in surrounding and people, and an inability to concentrate and a lack of energy.
Anxiety can cause panic attacks which can be very frightening when they occur for the first time as they cause the sufferer to feel short of breath and faint, and their heart may feel like it is racing. They are not however damaging.
As the symptoms of anxiety and depression could be explained away as someone just feeling out of sorts or a bit angry, it is as well to be aware that the person concerned may be ill, and to seek a proper diagnosis from a qualified medical practitioner so that their treatment can begin more quickly.
Anxiety and depression can be treated with very good results, so it is important to get a proper diagnosis so that a treatment plan can be worked out. The doctor can talk to the patient and explain to them exactly what the course of treatment is going to be and what they should expect to happen.
Treatment may consist of both drugs and therapy. While the drugs will start to relieve the symptoms of depression and make life feel more bearable for the patient, the therapy will look at the reason for the depression and will teach the patient how to deal with this so that they recover hopefully for good.
If one method of therapy does not seem to be effective then perhaps the physician will try another method. This treatment alongside the drugs will be effective but some patience may be needed.
It is important to keep remembering that there is no quick fix to depression and anxiety, and that although the drugs can mask the symptoms they probably cannot cure it all on their own. The therapy is necessary so that it is dealt with as completely as possible ensuring that the patient is fully returned to health and hopefully will not have another episode of depression. If it does reoccur then there is a better chance that they will recognize the symptoms and adjust the way they are feeling from the previous time so that medical treatment can be sought much earlier and the length of the depression will be less.
