Ergonomics - What Is It?

Ergonomics is a science. It is the science that designs another job in order for it to work properly according to natural laws. Ergonomics help to get the right equipment for every job and the right way to do the job. It is based on thorough knowledge of how the body works and ability to evaluate the work environment and create the best possible alternative. It is a necessary procedure in order to prevent injuries and make the workplace a safe environment that doesn’t pose any risks.

Ergonomics is divided to three main categories. The first is physical ergonomics. This aspect focuses on the human anatomy and the way the body works. This leads to taking the right decisions on how to design the working environment so that the body is not stressed. This is the main idea behind the science; to limit risks of injuries in the short term and health problems coming from work in the long term. The second category of ergonomics is cognitive ergonomics. This part concentrates on the mental abilities of the mind. Memory, perception and other skills of the mind are evaluated. It is used in jobs that require mental abilities and in jobs that include human mind and machine interaction. The third part is organizational ergonomics and it includes the technical systems. The focus is on ways that they can work better and provide assistance to the user.

Ergonomics has its origins in ancient Greece. From then on, it has spread in the whole world as it is very important. Applications of ergonomics cover many other jobs with the most important being in aircrafts and airplanes in aging and health care as well as transportation and nuclear environment. However it is also used in more common jobs especially those that involve use of equipment and machinery. The aim is always to design jobs that are safe for the human and that through this safety can produce a more efficient work product regardless of what it is.

For someone that works at an office it is very important to make sure that the environment is such that it will not cause him any harm. Adjusting the keyboard in such a way so that the wrist won’t hurt, adjusting the back of the chair to support the body as well as adjusting the chair to help your feet relax on the floor are all things that can be done. The aim here is to make the job easy and safe so that it doesn’t cause any harm and is more efficient. There are also other things that an agronomical design can do. For example, keeping the things you need in a distance that you can reach them without moving or making use of the correct side of your body for certain applications are also shown.

Ergonomics can help in any job. You can learn all the things mentioned above if you are working at an office, you can learn how to lift heavy objects if you are working at a factory or doing other types of work and mainly you can benefit for any job you will be doing.
