There can be an amount of blood found in the sac, and pain can be associated with this. These types usually clear up in a few cycles.

A tissue called the corpus luteum is left when an egg has been released into the ovary. Luteum cysts form when a pregnancy does not occur, and these luteum tissues remain to fill with either fluid or blood. There are normally no symptoms in these cases, and the problem usually occurs only on one side.

Types of dermoid cysts and others called cystic teratomas also occur when ovarian tissues develop in abnormal ways. These ovarian tissues actually develop into other bodily tissues and may even form hair and teeth. With most of these particular cases results of testing are benign.

A condition cells meant to grow inside the uterus to grow outside, is known as endometriosis. If the ovaries are also involved with this condition, then tissues can bleed and grow that will in time create brown areas known as chocolate cysts, or endomitrioma.

Cysts can be present in ovarian tumors as well, whether benign or malignant. There may be an occasion where cysts will not dissipate on their own, or may continue to grow. The physician will choose to perform various forms of testing to ensure that cancer is not present. Surgery to remove these cysts may be necessary.
