Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. Some believe them to be some type of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Given below are some common misconceptions prevalent about hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.
Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of dark arts. It hinges more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They hold that the subjects who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But that is not true at all. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.
Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is fully awake to what is going on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is therefore able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Some researchers have found that hypnosis works on just 5% of the world’s population, and this is another prevalent myth. The researchers are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in nature and temperament. People differ in their natures and personalities, and hence there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different people.
Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, on the other hand communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, whereas the very basis of the hypnosis method is communication.
It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in appearance or in patterns of conduct of a person. Hypnosis is clearly not wizardry that it can transform the physical appearance of an individual on its own. But it can bring about a development in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
