Ask most medical professionals, Why do people talk in their sleep, and it is most unlikely that they will be able to give you a full answer. Whilst it is widely believed to be stress and anxiety driven, there is still not concrete evidence behind this.
Scientifically known as Somniloquy, talking in your sleep is surprisingly common; affecting up to five percent of the adult population across the western world. It is more common in children, where fifty percent are likely to experience the behavior.
Some years ago, it was widely accepted that sleep talking occurred throughout REM, (Rapid Eye Movement), or deep sleep. Further research has cast doubt on this assumption and it is now not thought to be the case, happening instead at another sleep period.
It is now believed that quite apart from dreaming, sleep talking is actually a kind of paralysis that occurs as sleep patterns change; much like that feeling of falling we often experience as getting off to sleep. So it’s entirely possible that your sleep conversations aren’t related to your dreams.
The body changes as it enters sleep; and changes throughout sleep depending on how deep under we are. At these times, the difference between the subconscious and the conscious are difficult to explain; and it is hear that sleep talking is most likely to occur.
Sleep talking is not a dangerous condition, but it can lead to problems with those that are woken by it; much as snoring or teeth grinding can. There have been reports of violent episodes, though these have subsequently been proven to be more a case of further psychological issues.
In essence then, finding the truth behind why do people talk in their sleep is still one of life’s unknowns. However, steering clear of stimulants such as coffee before going to bed, and trying to relax, do seem to help in many cases.
