A funeral director’s main task is to make arrangements for the cremation or burial of the dead and for the particular rituals that are held before the burial.
The essential tasks of a funeral director involve moving the body to a mortuary, preparing the body for the funeral ceremony, making preparations for the ceremonies where people will remember and pay their last respects to the deceased, and performing the ultimate procedures on the corpse.
The tasks of a funeral director vary from posting obituaries in the local electronic and print media to arranging for a vehicle to carry the body, besides other planning tasks like deciding the time and place for holding the funeral service etc. Further, funeral directors have to arrange flowers and have the decoration carried out for each service, make provisions for vehicles for the gathered people and dress up the body for the ceremony after embalming it.
A funeral director has a lot of responsibilities other than the ones mentioned above, including performing the essential paperwork formalities as needed. He helps the relatives in procuring a death certificate. He also shoulders the responsibility of settling insurance claims for the family besides helping them take advantage of facilities like seniors’ burial support. He also takes care of problems related to annuities and transfer of pension of the deceased to the rightful beneficiary and helps the family to estimate a budget for the services.
He also has to associate with a wide range of professionals to accomplish his jobs in a proper and systematic manner. He has to deal with not only the coffin makers and flower sellers but also physicians and the clergy.
Finally, the funeral directors must be considerate too and must attempt to offer some comfort to the mourning family and try to help them out of their sorrows over the death of a loved one. Though a few funeral directors ignore this task, it is a critical aspect in a job like this.
