Rumors have come about of late that make it seem more probable that LeBron James will finish up signing with the Brand new York Knicks after this year.
When LeBron turns into a free agent in the end of the 2010 season, the Cavs will remain in the best position to extend him. This is a result of the Larry Bird rule, which lets a team to go over the salary cap in order to extend their own free agent.
The New York Knicks will give LeBron a big contract, although they will not know how to offer LeBron as much as Cleveland. So they got creative in the big city and found a way to get around that blasted salary cap.
The rumor is that New York will not only give James a max contract, although also his own cable television network. You see, the Knicks are owned by Cablevision, a cable television giant.
LeBron might earn profits from the advertisers on his cable network. According to basketball regulations, the franchise would not be permitted to set up these advertisements/advertisers for LeBron; he would be required to handle that on his own. Although I believe we would all acknowledge that LeBron has enough acquaintances in the commercial world to make this possible.
Speculation is that the channel might broadcast replays of Knicks games (whose rights belong to Cablevision), as well as other programming regarding James, the Knicks, along with the league. Some have even forecasted that Nike might hope to be involved and create their own TV series.
The large question is whether the NBA might consent to this. It appears to be to be wholly within league regulations. The cable television network might be seen as having a marginal edge of playing in NY, comparable to a selection of other marketing benefits that come from playing in a specific city. The income might be viewed as non-basketball related proceeds.
