NH Medical Lawyer

by Melody Landercy

Being a victim of medical malpractice can turn a person’s life upside down. Among the many things to consider once medical negligence has occurred, and perhaps the most important, is legal representation. But once you’ve narrowed down your choices, how will you know if the NH medical lawyer you are considering is the right one for you?

With so many choices, what things should you consider when making the difficult decision of which attorney would best represent your needs? Simply passing the bar does not make someone a good lawyer, and picking a name out of the phonebook seems haphazard and risky. So what should you know before you make such an important decision?

What type of experience do they have, and how much?

Particularly, how much experience do they have representing clients in NH? Medical malpractice laws are complicated and complex and each state has its own rules and regulations that must be followed. It is critical that you choose an attorney who is well versed in NH medical malpractice law so they can accurately represent you. For example, an experienced NH medical lawyer would know that the statute of limitations to file a medical malpractice claim is 3 years from the date of the act or omission giving rise to the injury. He will also know, however, that there are certain exceptions to that law and how that fits with your specific situation.

What kind of medical knowledge do they have?

It is important that a lawyer have an understanding of medical terminology. Medical verbiage pertaining to medical procedures and diagnoses can be confusing. A solid understanding of medical terms, diagnoses and procedures, is critical, in order to properly prove or disprove the testimonies that are being presented. Having access to qualified expert witnesses for consultation and to testify on your behalf is also important in a NH medical lawyer.

Do they have real-world litigation experience?

Many medical malpractice claims are settled outside of court. Even though this is true, there is a possibility that your case may end up in front of a judge or jury. This is why it is important that the NH medical lawyer you choose has ample experience with litigation in the courtroom setting.

Do they have a list of references?

You may not know anyone personally who can recommend a good NH medical lawyer so the next best thing is references. Ask each potential attorney if they can provide you with a list of clients who would be willing to share their experiences with you. This will help you determine how each one interacts with their clients and assist you in determining which one best suits your needs.

Remember, too, that you should choose someone with whom you feel comfortable because you will likely have to work very closely with this person for the duration of your case.

With the complexity of medical malpractice cases, choosing a medical attorney is serious business. These guidelines can assist you in selecting a NH medical lawyer that can best represent you and your case.
