Overcoming lethargy is not an easy task. The very nature of this problem is the lack, loss or absence of self motivation. A vicious cycle develops when its heavy weight descends upon someone. It can creep up so slowly that its victim may not realize he has developed a problem. Often it takes a near catastrophe to bring the lethargic person to the point where he sees he’s in trouble. And he must reach this point if he ever hopes to get back in the game.
A cycle is a powerful mechanism which compounds speed efficiently. The cycle of listlessness quickly reduces a person to the point where everything is just, ” Too much.” This attitude is what greases the wheels of the lethargy cycle. Which means that you need to find a way to break out of this cycle.
The only way to stop the cycle of defeatist thought is to intercept it with some well thought out questions. Some questions only increase the problem by highlighting the apparent enormity of the situation. Don’t start by asking, “How can I achieve the goals that I have let slide, now that I have let every opportunity pass me by?”
This question only serves to highlight the hopelessness of the situation and can cause an already struggling person to give up. This question is too overwhelming to be of any use. A better question is one which gives an answer leading to a specific, measurable objective.
It is much better to frame a question that will bring an answer that seems do-able.”How can I start my journey toward achieving my goals by making a small start today?” This question does not suggest that the lethargic person must immediately go out and dig up his entire front lawn to get rid of the dandelions. But he could look online and compare the different kinds of weed killers. He could decide which.
Human beings have struggled with overcoming lethargy since the dawn of mankind. It is a formidable task, but success can be achieved if the sufferer will tackle it in the most commonly productive way. Start with an admission of the problem, then ask the right kind of questions to yield answers that work. Answers that bring hope are the ones that are worth asking.
