Pharmacies Today Provide Personalized Services

Pharmacy has originated from a Greek word meaning ‘drug’. This field of medical sciences was developed with sole objective of developing a safe use and supply of medicines by the general public. Earlier, traditional roles including the likes of compounding and dispensing drugs were included in the branch of pharmacy. But in the present scenario, pharmacies have gathered more diversified and complex nursing facilities. These roles generally include clinical roles like counselling drug information to the patient, keeping in mind the medical history of the patient. This ensures that the patient does not receive a wrong medicinal treatment.

A medical practitioner needs to register for a four year degree program to work or own a pharmacy. After completing this course the practitioner becomes a registered Pharmacist. Such a course ensures that the pharmacist has ample knowledge about the response of human body to chemical drugs. Each and every medicine is thoroughly tested before reaching the patient’s body. After a few years of professional practice, a pharmacist is capable of owning his/her own pharmacy for more profitability.

Every country follows their traditional style of running a pharmacy and so they also specialize differently. In Australia, America and the United Kingdom, pharmacies generally act as general stores or retail outlets. Here one can shop for medicines and food items together. Other countries usually deal with medicines alone and are required to be administered by a registered pharmacist. While the registered pharmacist counsels the patient about the drug, trained pharmacy technicians help to hand out the drug to the patient.

Generally, hospitals, retirement communities and nursing homes have their own pharmacy inside the premises. Extra training and specialization in a medical field is often required in order to be recruited as a pharmacist in hospital pharmacy. He/she should know how to administer infectious diseases, emergency situations, sexually transmitted diseases and the likes. Administration in hospital pharmacy is quite different from what we see in community pharmacy. Hospital pharmacies, especially stock up surgical instruments like sealing devices, suction tips and tubes, sterile equipments. These instruments come in very handy, in case of high casualty accident or when large numbers of patients undergo surgeries.

Clinical pharmacies are also found in hospitals and other clinics, and are usually involved in a clinical trial setting. This role is performed in collaboration with doctors, nurses and other medical personnel involved in any clinical study.

There’s another type pharmacy that compounds drugs in such a way that they obtain a desired form and strength of the required medicine. Such pharmacies are called compounding pharmacies and they are generally found in hospitals, nursing home, nursing center and retirement communities.

Other less popular pharmacies include military, veterinary, nuclear, consulting and internet pharmacies. Online pharmacy is another innovative and cheap way of counselling drugs. This involves the concept of tele-pharmacy and is slowly gaining reputation. This type of pharmacy caters to those living in remote areas.
