However, you can also get non-toxic antifreeze in market that do not affect the environment at all. These types of antifreeze could be easily used for any home purpose.

RV antifreeze is one of them. It is used in most of the homes and has no odor and is harmless. It can be safely used with steel, copper, brass and plastics. First, you can choose to drain both the supply and drain pipes. Usually it is a good idea to hook an air compressor up to the supply lines to blow out any residual water. Also, you could seal the drains to prevent any gasses from working their way into the home. This includes plugging the toilet bowls, e.g. with a cloth rag.

Insulation is also an efficient way to prevent water pipe freezing. This insulation can be provided by wrapping heat tape over the water pipes and also don’t forget to seal the drains. In absence of electricity for quite a long time, this could prove to be very dangerous.

One other easy way is to set the thermostat at a comparatively low temperature at which the pipes would not freeze such as 50F or 55F.

So by now, you must have learned the trick of preventing the freezing of water pipes. But all the methods have some good points and bad points associated with them. Draining out all water from supply pipes is the most inexpensive way of preventing water pipe freezing.
