Precautions To Take Against DUI

by Richard Milford

One of the most common causes of road accidents is when driver drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other medications which cause them to lose focus and concentration on the road.

This is a problem experienced by all states and as a result they have set up sanctions for those caught committing the offense with the intention of at least trying as best possible to solve this problem. This is important to ensure the safety of innocent people on the road who aren’t driving under the influence or while intoxicated, as well as the offender.

Several substances are directly related to driving under the influence (DUI). One is alcohol which has more often than not become the primary cause why drivers can’t drive well anymore.

A fact that people often neglect to think about is that after a few shots are handed out and everyone is enjoying themselves and are happy on their evening out, that they will need to drive home.

Another cause that causes drivers to lose grasp of their faculties is drugs. These drugs that lead to a lethargic and high feeling could be in any form. Some use marijuana, while some use the stronger, methamphetamine.

Usage of these drugs is widespread among truck drivers and especially those that have to drive long distances at night. Drugs are commonly used to help them stay awake while driving, but unfortunately the drug keeps them awake for days on end. Although there are some truck drivers who think this is an acceptable practice, others don’t think it is necessary. They find it alright to use drugs to stay awake for the job, but not when it means for staying awake several days after the job is done.

It is one thing to find ways to prevent driving under the influence, yet there are not enough prohibitory laws preventing the sale of alcohol to minors or the sale of drugs to them. Attention needs to be given to minors and teaching them about the consequences of DUI, because the fact is that road accidents involving minors is often DUI related.

Depending what state you are in. the penalties for DUI offenses vary with some having lighter ones than others. Penalties for DUI can be fines, jail time and license suspension and first time offenders do not escape them. For the second timer or more the punishment will be more severe. They could be longer jail time, higher fines and license suspension will be longer.

Authorities are being much more aware in the apprehension of people operating a vehicle while under the influence because of the unacceptable number of fatalities, one thousand in one year.

As the saying goes, better safe than sorry. It is a wise one to keep in mind if you are planning to have any drinks for whatever occasion or reason. Too many believe that they can resist alcohols effect but it is not true and there will be consequences for their actions. A better way to go is have someone give you a ride home or better yet drop you off and pick you up, even if you think it’s troublesome. Doing so will let you enjoy yourself and act responsibly.
