It is good to hear for teachers that they will only need to teach six students a day. Everything is different though for a lady instructor of the hearing impaired program. Through funding from a three year federal grant, her six students ranging from the ages of 5 to 15 are able to take part in a program by the local special education cooperative. Learning disability classes are made available for 19 school districts served by the coop.
From the six students, four are profoundly deaf while two are hard of hearing. With a decibel loss of 60 or less, the hard of hearing can function in regular classrooms but require special assistance. 90 decibels or more is the loss experienced by the profoundly deaf. In these cases, communication is impaired and the students need special learning methods. Based on their ability to hear, those belonging to the hearing impaired class are equipped with personal hearing aids.

There is another method used to teach which is the tactile method done through touch. The g, s, or th sounds are comprehended by touching the teacher’s throat or by feeling her tongue. The teacher says that it’s not unusual to walk into her classroom and see one of her students with his hand in her mouth. The curriculum includes social studies, math, grammar, and spelling. When the student is prepared to be integrated into other classes in the school system, he may study speech, gym, auto mechanics, music, typing, and home economics. Students allowed to attend the class must be 18 and younger.
Her motivation for helping the hearing impaired may come with much speculation. Much justification is provided when it comes to her choice of careers. Just turning five years old, she was diagnosed with a hearing impairment. When she was born, she had closed eustachian tubes and no cartilage in her ears. Corrective surgery is to thanks for the recovery of her hearing as well as those of the people she helped. Considering hearing loss in children, she already knew what career path she will be taking as early as the fifth grade.
Studying in a college in Illinois, she now carries a special education degree. Afterwards, her next challenge was in a Florida university and this is where she managed to graduate with deaf and elementary education degrees as well as earn a certificate in learning disabilities. Her previous occupation before coming to Southwest Kansas two years ago is as a teacher in a school for the deaf in Fort Lauderdale. Helping her in her intense daily routine is the phonic ear system which she uses wherein sound is relayed to the ears of the students so they have to listen to everything she says.
