If you have basic carpentry skills and know how to use a level you can start installing house shutters in your home. If you feel uncomfortable about doing the job, you may want to pay a professional to install the shutters for you. However, installing shutters is not complicated and can be done by many people.
Do not be anxious at the thought of installing your new house shutters. If your neighbors can accomplish this easy job, so can you. You simply need to get acquainted with a few simple procedures. There are two different methods for installing your shutters. You can pick an inside mount or an outside mount. It is recommended to install an inside mount that can be accomplished straight from your open window.
Inside mount installation
With an inside mount installation, the shutter is connected flush with the inside of the window opening on the window jamb. This is normally a easier process of installation and is used primarily by carpenters because it is cleaner and needs no framing strips.
The window jamb should be solid. Next, you should attach the shutter hardware with screws. To do this, drill a hole through the jamb at the correct spots so that the unit can be attached into the window jamb. The jamb should be solid so that the screws will be secure.
Now that you have attached the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters line up with the window. You can use a level to be sure that they are lined up. Refer to the instructions of the supplier as each style of inside mounted shutter requires different mounting procedures. If you understand how to use simple power tools, you will be able to quickly accomplish installing house shutters in an inside mount position.
Outside mount installation
Understandably, an outside mount attaches to the outside of the window, most often into the trim, but occasionally in the wall. If you wish to use an outside mount on shutters inside your house, avoid having to screw the hardware into the wall panel unless it is anchored because the unit will simply rip itself out of the wall. Some people favor an outside mount because you can be a little “off” when it comes to the measurements, unlike with an inside mount. Of course this means that the outside mount does not look as finished as the inside mount.
Make sure you use a level when installing shutters in order to ensure that the shutters are hung straight. Your eyes can play tricks on you, but a level will not. You will also require an electric drill, a way to mount the screwdriver heads, and perhaps some toggles if you are installing the shutters on sheetrock without a stud.
Do not be hesitant to install your house shutters yourself. This is fairly easy and after you have installed one shutter, the rest will come very easily. Installing house shutters is simple, as long as you have the correct tools, including a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you can complete this job easily and within a short period of time.
