The Idea Behind Subliminal Perception

James Vicary once reported that there seemed to be an increase in popcorn and soda sales during movies when “Eat Popcorn” and “Drink Coke” were flashed on the big screen. George Orwell even incorporated the idea of subliminal perception in his book 1984. Messages have been sent subliminally in advertising for the past 30 years. Even the BBC used messages in their radio jingles in the 1920s. The desire to unlock the unconscious processes of the mind have always been intriguing and what most people want to do.

When people are repeatedly exposed to certain types of food, clothes, or even shoes, they begin to favor specific brands over others. James Vicary noticed that sales for soda and popcorn increased when the words “Eat Popcorn” and “Drink Coke” were flashed on the movie screen. Exposure to the same stimuli increases the draw towards a particular object.

Why is this? Endless studies have been performed on the correlation between the amount of stimuli about an object and how much a person favors that particular object. The results showed that being repeatedly exposed to the same object increased the desire to have or be around that object.

An example of one such experiment is with 20 polygons, divided up into 10 pairs. There is one polygon from the pair that is flashed subliminally to a person and one shown directly. When 7 subliminal flashes have been performed, for one polygon, the person is asked which polygon s/he has a preference for.

When seven subliminal flashes of one particular polygon has been achieved, the person is asked to choose which of the twenty polygons she prefers most of all. The majority of the people will choose the polygon that was repeatedly flashed subliminally.

Social and cognitive psychologists have been intrigued with the idea of subliminal perception for a countless number of years. They feel that subliminal stimuli is perceived by humans and alters their cognitive processes, as well as possibly their behavior. From cartoons to politics, subliminal stimuli is everywhere. The desire to find out more about the unconscious processes of the human mind will always be strong.
