The Kitchen Blender, One Machine With Many Uses

by Mandy Rogers

You may have forgotten that you even own a blender, but if you dig back far enough in the cabinets, there it is. Often we buy a blender for a special occasion and simply never think of how else they can be used so they get pushed back under the cabinet in the appliance graveyard. It is time to resurrect this appliance and put it back to use.

It is time to dig that blender out to use it for some of the following ideas.

Blenders are great for babies. They can turn ordinary food into gourmet baby food. Just add the veggies, soups, stews or even meats that you cook for your own family to the blender and puree for great baby food. Avoid spicy foods so that the baby’s tummy does not get upset. This is a much better alternative than buying those jars where you do not know what is included.

Make your own fruit smoothies. Just add some fresh fruit into the blender and blend. Add a few ice cubes, sugar or artificial sweetener and milk. Blend everything up and serve for a tropical treat.

Speaking of coffee, use that blender to grind coffee beans. There is no need to invest in a coffee grinder, the blender works great on low. By grinding your own beans, there you get the fresh taste of the coffeehouses. Do not blend long enough to overheat the beans and burn them.

Grind spices. Once again, use the low setting and grind your own fresh cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, nutmeg or other spices. Freshly ground spices have a much more intense flavor.

Chop nuts. If you have whole nuts and your recipe calls for crushed nuts, then throw what you have into the blender. In a matter of seconds, you will have coarsely crushed nuts. Blend a little longer for finely crushed nuts. Add roasted peanuts to the blender and blend until you have home made peanut butter.

Use the blender to make fluffy omelets or scrambled eggs. Just break the eggs into the blender and let the stainless steel blades whip air into the eggs.

For perfect gravies with no lumps, fill the blender jar half-full of your cooked gravy and blend for a few seconds. The resulting gravy will be perfect every time.

Of course, a blender is great for mixed drinks. It is an essential part of margaritas and pina coladas. Try virgin versions for those who do not drink alcohol. Additionally try freezing juice in ice cube trays and blend with unfrozen juice to make healthy slushies.

To remind yourself to use that blender more often move it out where you can see it on the counter top. Then as you are cooking or preparing snacks, you can be reminded that this is one of the most useful tools in the kitchen. Clean up is a snap, just add hot water and a few drops of detergent. Blend on high for a few minutes and rinse. On occasion, you may need to disassemble the blender container to clean.
