Vizio does more on the electronic scene than supply Wal-Mart with inexpensive Televisions. Based in Irvine, CA. Vizio is the number 1 seller of HDTV in the United States. Vizio is in top gear when it comes to making the TV the next conduit for internet access. Vizio is aiming at creating a wealth of opportunities for developers as well as an exciting event for consumers.
Vizio’s strategy for their new top of the line TVs is breathtaking. The XVT models as they are referred to, will roll out in the 4th quarter of 2009. They feature a new technology that Vizio has coined as smart dimming. The technology involved shutting down portions of the LED back lighting to create astonishing images.
With that said Vizio has more up their sleeve than contrast ratios. The largest innovation that Vizio is bringing to the proverbial table is internet connectivity. Vizio has high hopes, that the television is going to become a major internet platform like the PC or the mobile phone.
Vizio isn’t just shoving Ethernet cords in the back of LCD screens. In many of the XVT series TV sets, Vizio has installed Wi-Fi 802.11n modems. The great thing about the wireless modems is that not everyone has their router close to their TV. With Vizios forward thinking it doesn’t matter whether they do or do not because they can connect wirelessly.
Not only are the TVs going to be able to read internet content, they are also going to be able to interact. Vizio is going to be supporting Yahoos widget channel as well as Adobe flash apps. This means that developers and companies alike can build interactive environments for users to participate in. Many TV companies have announced support for the Yahoo widget channel but only Vizio supports Adobe as well.
Vizio will have a program within the TV which allows users to use Adobe or Yahoo apps on the same interface. Aside from streamlining content for increased ease of use, Vizio hopes to blend all apps this way to aid ease of development. Vizio wants to get an many TVs connected to the internet as possible to benefit the widest number of developers.
Some of the companies that have signed on to produce widgets include but aren’t limited to Facebook, Twitter, EBay, Showtime, Netflix, and Rhapsody. At launch there will only be about 20 apps. By the end of the 4th quarter in 2010 there will be over 1000. Vizio’s goal isn’t to try to recreate the experience that takes place on the browser, but do develop an individual environment that is similar to that of the Iphone.
Vizio’s new TV is almost a bit of a cyborg as far as televisions go. Not only does it have a Wi-Fi modem, it also sports 2GB of flash memory as well as Bluetooth capabilities. If that wasn’t enough, every television will come with a remote control that has a qwerty keyboard similar to an Blackberry. The keyboard not only will allow users to search and Tweet on Twitter but it also has basic game controls so that people can play Flash games on their TV effortlessly and easily.
