The special words and the language used by healthcare professionals is referred to as medical terminology. Doctors, nurses, medical transcriptionist, and medical assistants use medical terminology to communicate effectively and precisely.
Many people studying medicine used to learn Latin since the majority of medical terminology is based on Latin. This is not as common as it used to be. People studying in a medical field often memorize the meanings for a root words, prefixes, and suffixes of medical terminology.
What is the importance of medical terminology in the medical field? It allows the medical professionals to describe symptoms and conditions in precise terms. Using medical terminology can save healthcare professionals a significant amount time that would otherwise be spent giving long descriptions in plain English.
If doctors could not use medical terminology to describe the condition or symptoms, they may experience more misunderstandings. The doctor could neglect to mention one of the symptoms or described differently than another doctor would.
Using plain in English to describe medical symptoms could lead to misunderstandings. For example, the word “black” seems easy enough to understand, but skin described as black could mean necrotic, dead tissue or a black and blue bruise.
A disadvantage of using medical terminology is that it is not well understood by the general public. Doctors need to speak in plain English when talking directly to patients. Patients and their families should not be afraid to ask questions concerning the health of the patient and the medical condition.
Patients are typically given a diagnosis that is a medical term. Medical dictionaries and other Internet resources can help the patient find information about the diagnosis. This may be difficult if the patient cannot spell the diagnosis correctly.
Some medical terminology is easily understood such as -itis meaning the “inflammation of.” We see this used in appendicitis, dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and bronchitis as well as other medical conditions involving the inflammation or irritation of a specific body part. The first part of the word refers to the body part that is inflamed such as “derma,” meaning “skin,” in the word dermatitis.
