The basic teachings of Lord Buddha form the core of the Buddhist religion which is practised extensively in many nations of the world today. Buddhism involves quest for the Ultimate Truth and also a sense of compassion and true love for every creature.
Buddhist funeral rites also rely on these basic tenets of the religion. There are certain compulsory rituals that have to be adhered to during the funeral of a deceased person. These rites are meant to ensure that the departed soul is raised to a higher stage. Prayers are chanted invoking the good energies of the deceased for his or her deliverance from this life cycle.
The first task in funeral rituals is that of giving a traditional wash to the body. After that comes the stage of chanting of religious scriptures by the priests, thereby directing the soul to the path of spiritual freedom. The teachings of the Buddha, which speak of the value of goodness and compassion in life, are recited aloud. The body is meanwhile prepared for the final rituals. The deceased is usually provided with some coins put in his casket by the family. This is believed to help the deceased cross the River of Three Hells to reach his destination.
The casket is then put before the altar in the house for friends and relatives to pay their respects. Attendees are required to pray for the dead person and the family and relatives give their condolences. Monks who perform the rituals continue to chant the appropriate sutras. After the completion of recitals, people attending the ceremony bow at the altar. After the ceremony, the family members of the deceased give out gifts to the attendees for sharing their grief.
Once these rituals are carried out, the body may then be either buried or cremated according to the beliefs of the family. These rites are meant to enable the family to overcome their grief by offering prayers that will raise the dead to a higher pedestal of enlightenment and knowledge.
