What is Wordpress? Well basically Wordpress is a platform for creating websites. It could be described as being a blogging platform, and indeed it is a blogging platform, but it is also much more than that. Wordpress is also an all-round website creation and management solution, and websites created using Wordpress do not necessarily need to look like blogs, they can look like non-blog websites too.
History of Wordpress
Before Wordpress came along there was a platform called b/cafeblog. By May 2003 is was estimated that it had been used to power about 2,000 blogs. As part of a collaboration between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little the Wordpress project was born in 2003.
Wordpress Formats
The great thing about Wordpress is its flexibility. There are two main ways of using the service. One is called Wordpress.com and the other is called Wordpress.org. Wordpress.com allows you to use the service without having your own website, so your blog would simply be a subdomain of the main Wordpress.com website. In contrast, the Wordpress.org version allows users to upload the software to their own website.
So which is the best version of Wordpress to use? Well, the answer to that lies in what kind of way you wish to use it. The benefit of the Wordpress.com version is that it is so easy to set up and run, and is therefore great for novices who just want to quickly put up a blog but do not want the hassle of running their own website.
Having said that, Wordpress.org has some major benefits for those who want to take their blogging to the next level. With the ability to be able to use it on your own website, this means you can have whatever domain name you want. As well as this, there is a huge range of layouts and add-ons that you can choose from, all helping to make your website unique.
