Emotional affairs can get bad really fast. It can be very difficult to break off the affair especially if the partners have gotten too intimate. The resulting dangers will always be present.
There are those who think that limits should be set in a marriage. Everyone has friends.
It is easy to have friendships. These friendships can become intimate.
Friendship with the opposite sex can become so close that it qualifies as an affair of the heart. When two persons of opposing genders share intimate emotional details with each other it is an affair of the heart. It becomes worse if the bond with another person is kept a secret from the other spouse.
It can be damaging to a marriage. If your wife finds out about your special relationship with a woman, she might feel betrayed. She could believe that you violated a trust between the two of you.
It is still disputed whether emotional affairs are purely emotional or if there is sexual and/or physical attraction involved. If one merely needs to share intimate matters, why does it have to be with a person of the opposite sex? Then why not share it with your wife or husband?
It could not be harmless, because it is difficult to reveal the relationship to the spouse. It could be just a tactic, of starting it as a seemingly platonic affair with the intention of making it sexual. Once it becomes a full-blown sexual/physical affair outside the marriage, the complications begin.
You may want to break up the affair. The first thing to do is to admit it, tell your spouse or talk to a psychiatrist. If to share intimate details of your life is all you need, you could have talked to them from the beginning. These kinds of relationships could ruin lives and make you feel you should not have gotten involved in one of those emotional affairs.
