Despite what you may think, it is actually a good idea to have more than one cover letters samples at your disposal. This is a good idea because when you have a number of different samples to choose from you can submit applications faster. It is a good idea to have a sample for a couple of situations so you are ready for anything.
Sure it will still be necessary to make at least a few modifications for every application. The extent of the modifications you will have to make will be much less significant when you have samples available for a few different situations.
Take the time to put together cover letters samples for lateral moves as well as for moves that will help you land higher level jobs. It is also worth your time to prepare a sample cover letter for positions which are below your current status. Doing this will help to ensure you are prepared for any job opening you find. A cover letter sample for a position similar to the one you currently have should stress your current job duties. Take some time to ensure this sample adequately describes the type of work you do. This is not the time to include descriptions of duties you perform which should be done by someone in a lower position.
Cover letters samples for higher ranking positions are a little bit harder to write but they should demonstrate how you are currently performing above your current job level and the skills you have which are not being utilized properly. This sample should also make it obvious that you are eager for more responsibility in your career.
Finally, it is worthwhile to have a sample of a cover letter for a position you are slightly overqualified for. Although this may sound like a position you do not want you never know when you will be in this type of situation. This lesser position at another company may pay more than your current position or difficult economic times may force you to consider less favorable options.
